Gun Owners of America Endorses Dan Benishek for Congress in Michigan

Dr. Dan Benishek is much more than simply a good vote for the Second Amendment.  A medical doctor by profession first elected the U.S. House in 2010, Congressman Benishek has emerged as a leader in the fight for the right to keep and bear arms.

In addition to a perfect pro-gun voting record and cosponsoring several pieces of legislation designed to roll back unconstitutional gun control restrictions, Dr. Benishek also authored a bill to protect gun owners’ rights on federal land.

H.R. 2834, the “Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act,” would require the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to facilitate use and access for recreational shooting and hunting on federal lands.

Too often, federal bureaucrats and self-proclaimed environmentalists seek to cut off federal land from any and all shooting.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for example, has sought to limit recreational shooting by banning lead ammunition.

The Benishek bill also would ease the way for more shooting ranges and recreational shooting areas in land managed by the USFS and BLM.

This provision will benefit shooters across the country but is particularly helpful to gun owners in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where the National Forest controls up to half the land in some counties.

A lifelong resident of the Upper Peninsula, Dr. Benishek’s goal is to ensure that “shooting rights are protected on federal lands for years to come,” said Benishek, an avid outdoorsman and lifelong resident of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
